About

sketch 20160213 Gigi Hadid

This is one of my first portrait sketches – Gigi Hadid.  The cross-hatch/shading attempt under the neck ended up looking like a beard.  I fall off my chair laughing every time I look at it.

Join me on my journey to transform Gigi from glaring hunchback to glamorous supermodel again.

Be prolific not perfect

About enjoying drawing again.  Finding those extra 15 minutes in the day to slow down and be present .  Remembering a moment or two from each day.  Revisiting Sydney suburbs.

And keeping a daily sketchbook journal,  this time hopefully for a bit longer.

I’m still grappling with my inner critic.  1001 sketches …  Here we go …

PS.  Would be great if you could share your sketches of the places that I’ve been to in my Comments section.

PS(2).  Thank you again for your support and encouragement.

  1. Beautiful sketches! At first I also had some “severe” difficulties with the cross hatch-shading method;) Love sour note about how drawing can slow you down and keep you in the moment…that´s exactly what I love about it too!:) Have a beautiful weekend! Sarah

  2. What a great philosophy to keep in mind! I think i focus too much on making my drawing “perfect” as opposed to just drawing for the love of drawing. That’s where some of the best work comes from.

  3. You are creating some quite charming and playful sketches and paintings. I hope you continue down this path and do not try to become hyper-realistic with them. Your style already has your personal stamp on it–just continue to let it lead you where it may without forcing it to comply with some preconceived outcome. As a side benefit, it’s just much more fun that way!

    1. That’s great insight … about not being hyper-realistic. As I look back on the first sketchbook that I’ve filled, I’m enjoying having a more distinct memory of the day and places that I visited.

  4. I’m enjoying your sketching, sometimes with a colour wash too…minimalist, essential…a way I wish I could draw (if I could draw, that is!). PS: What does the thirtyninepines mean?

    1. I hadn’t drawn much until I began this blog … the accountability was a way of turning it into a habit so that I’d be able to improve towards the goal of a travelogue of our annual xmas holiday overseas 🙂

  5. Love you sketches. And I agree about accountability and habit. Since I have started adding the occasional sketch to my blog it has made me sketch more and worry about the outcome less. I’m sure your travelogue will be great.

  6. Nice to meet you — thanks for ‘liking’ my blog a r t i c k l e! Your sketches are fabulous! I love the daily stuff you pack in to your lines. And, for the record, the cross-hatching on Gigi does NOT read as a beard. It’s perfect. I’ll stop back to peruse some more of your work. Keep having fun!

    1. I too enjoy getting ideas from other artists! Good luck with your new blog … I’ve found that committing to posting daily has meant that I do practice more often that I otherwise would. I look forward to chatting and seeing more of your work 🙂
