Out and About : Newtown

Newtown is an inner west city suburb 4km from the Sydney CBD; originally a working class suburb and later affordable housing for university students and artsy types, the area has become popular for its cool, diverse and unique population within a stone’s throw from the city.  At time of writing, Newtown does not have its own McDonald’s restaurant (closed in the 1990s) – Phew!

Terrace Houses @ Newtown

#0050  Single fronted terrace houses in line the streets of Newtown; similar but not quite the same.  The unrestored ones have matching iron lacework on the balconies and fence.

Cafe Newtown @ Newtown

#0049  A relaxing spot for breakfast and watching the world go by near the Saturday markets; at the intersection of the main roads in Newtown (shared the “hangover breakfast”).  The customer at the counter is your typical Newtown hipster-type.

PS.  Recently discovered my favourite fountain pen has washable ink, shame because its so enjoyable to draw with.  Had to adapt to it using less water with the watercolour paints which makes the colours more opaque; noticed the bleeding effect works well for shading.

Red Cars @ Newtown

#0047  The challenge to draw red cars while waiting at the bus stop.  Most were barely still for more than 15 seconds!
